Stephen Watler

Stephen Watler joined the Maples Group as a trainee in 2005 and qualified in 2007.  He has worked in various jurisdictions for the firm including London and Hong Kong, and is currently based in the Cayman Islands.  Stephen also spent time on secondment at White & Case LLP in London, in their Banking and Capital Markets team.

Stephen attended the Schulich School of Business, York University, Canada, BBA (Hons), the University of East Anglia, UK (GDL/CPE); and the College of Law, UK. He was admitted as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands in 2007 and as a solicitor in England and Wales (not practicing) in 2013

Stephen is a Past President of the Caymanian Bar Association and a member of the Cayman Islands Law Society and the Law Society of England and Wales. He is also a former Member of the Board of Governors of the University College of the Cayman Islands.

Stephen is a member of the Maples Group’s Funds & Investment Management team. He has advised managers and institutional clients based in the United States, England and various countries in Asia on a variety of fund structures including unit trusts, segregated portfolio companies, exempted companies and partnerships. Stephen has extensive knowledge on Cayman Islands and Asia regulatory matters involving retail, administered and registered mutual funds, as well as the restructuring and winding up of investment funds.  He also acts for hedge funds, private equity funds, structured finance vehicles and provides advice on general corporate and commercial matters.

David Sherwin

David Sherwin read Modern History at Keble College, Oxford (MA). In 2008 he was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales (now not practicing) and worked in the Restructuring and Corporate teams at Burges Salmon LLP in Bristol, UK. In 2011 he was admitted as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands and joined the Maples Group.

David is currently Of Counsel in the Maples Group Funds & Investment Management team. He advises hedge funds, private equity funds and investment managers on non-standard matters arising in fund formations, restructuring, fund transactions and fund terminations. He acts as an internal consultant for the Maples Group on certain key legislative and regulatory developments and works both with government and local industry on jurisdiction-wide projects such as the implementation of the beneficial ownership regime and similar initiatives.
